Six unusual Covid symptoms and side effects to look out for

Everyone knows the main three symptoms of Covid that the NHS released early on during the Covid-19 pandemic. They included a temperature, persistent or new cough, and loss of sense taste, or smell.

But with the discovery of new variants and sub-variants such as Delta and Omicron, many new symptoms and side effects have now been added to the list. So far, nine more official symptoms have been added to the list by the NHS.

Some people with coronavirus experience more common symptoms like fever, aches, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, and a cough. However, some others contract more unusual symptoms, the Mirror reports.

Here are six uncommon symptoms of the virus:

Palpitations

One symptom of Covid, which can overlap with other medical conditions is palpitations, due to fever or inflammation caused by the virus.

Some people report palpitations or their heart beating faster, even after their initial infection has passed. For some people, this symptom is also a sign of long Covid.

Hearing loss

A study from Stanford University last year found that the Omicron variant could cause problems with the ear.

Some symptoms reported by the study include severe earache, ear numbness, and even temporary hearing loss in some people, which persists even after the infection has passed.

Experts have found that ear-related symptoms of the virus can appear in those who are fully-vaccinated as well.

Covid toes

Covid toe is a skin condition associated with swelling, blister-like bumps or discolouration on the toes (or even fingers). Though it can be painless for some, Covid toes can be extremely sore and itchy, with tender blisters and swelling.

Covid symptoms also seem to be more common among children or young adults and can last up to 14 days or for months

Hair loss

Hair loss is a symptom of Covid, which occurs months after the infection. It happens because the hair follicles are overstimulated during the infection after which they change into a resting/shedding phase at the same time.

Usually, this symptom seems to improve three to six months after infections.

Vocal cord issues

Studies have found that there's a connection between Covid and your vocal cord mobility. Sometimes voice changes occur in patients of Covid, increasing the possibility of vocal cord paralysis due to peripheral nerve damage.

Another possibility during infection is an injury to the vagus nerve, which controls voice, swallowing, breathing, and coughing. If the vagus nerve doesn't function properly it can also manifest as shortness of breath with or without a cough.

Delirium

Brain fog or confusion has been established as a symptom of the virus as well as long Covid.

However, a more severe form of confusion such as delirium, which can be accompanied by vivid hallucinations and even paranoia, is more common among older people who have been infected by Covid.
