Six times the Queen sent secret messages - Ukraine flowers and lockdown brooch

They say actions speak louder than words - and it seems this is very much the case for the Queen.

She rarely talks about her inner most thoughts and feelings, but sometimes instead uses her clothes, jewellery or even her surroundings to send what some believe are secret messages.

Just this week while meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Windsor Castle, and royal watchers were quick to point out the beautiful blue and yellow flowers in the background.

Of course yellow and blue are the colours of the Ukrainian flag and it was seen as a tribute to the people of the country amid the Russian invasion.

So what other secret messages has she seemingly sent in recent years? Here we take a look...

Ukraine flowers

The most recent subtle message was of course the the blue and yellow flowers on display at Windsor Castle during an audience with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Mr Trudeau was in London earlier this week for talks on the war in Ukraine with Boris Johnson and Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte.

Sources said that the small gesture of the flowers was a deliberate sign of the Queen's solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Later, at a press conference with Mr Johnson and Mr Rutte, Mr Trudeau confirmed he talked to Her Majesty about Ukraine.

He explained: "I can tell you in my conversation with her this morning she was as insightful and perspicacious as ever, very interested in what's going on."

In 2017, the Queen attended the State Opening of Parliament wearing a vibrant blue hat that featured yellow flowers.

At that time the debate surrounding the aftermath of the Brexit vote was raging in the UK and in her speech, which is written by the government, she outlined how the country was preparing to exit the EU.

However, many people on social media couldn't help but notice that her hat very much resembled that of the European Union flag.

In 2019, in her book The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, the Queen dresser Angela Kelly insisted "it never occurred to her" the hat resembled the flag.

Anniversary brooch

During last year's deeply personal Christmas message, the Queen paid an extraordinary tribute to her late beloved husband Prince Philip.

Pinned to her dress was a stunning sapphire chrysanthemum brooch that royal fans pointed out she wore on many happy times with the Duke of Edinburgh - believing it was a tribute to him.

Among the times she wore the brooch was on her honeymoon in 1947 and to mark her 73rd wedding anniversary in 2020.

Red boxes

Just last month, an image of a beaming Queen was released to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee year.

It shows her at Sandringham going through papers from her red box, which she is sent everyday from the Government.

And according to former royal butler Grant Harrold, it was significant the boxes were included in the snap.

He said on Tik Tok: "People keep asking me do I think the Queen is going to continue with her work? Well in this photograph you see one of her official government boxes and of course this is the Queen doing her day to day work.

"I think this shows all of us that even though she's now coming into her 96th year, she's been on the throne 70 years, she is very much going to continue being a monarch."

Lockdown message brooch

One of the most important address the Queen has given to the country in the past two years came in April 2020.

In it, she spoke of the unprecedented nature of the Covid pandemic being fought around the globe and promised "we will meet again" despite lockdown.

For the speech, the Queen wore a beautiful turquoise and diamond brooch that once belonged to her grandmother Queen Mary.

It was later pointed out that stone is said to be one that promotes healing and love as well as enhances the powers of leadership.

Cop26 outfit

Last November, a bout of ill health meant the Queen had to pull out of attending the Cop26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

However, she recorded a rousing video message where she urged world leaders to help protect the planet.

For the speech, she wore a green dress, which is of course the colour of being environmentally friendly.

She paired it with a rare a diamond and ruby butterfly which was gifted to her upon her engagement to Prince Philip.

And many believed it was her subtle way of paying tribute to her late husband, who had been heavily involved in environmental matters.
