Perched on a hillside on the northern tip of the island, overlooking the crystalline waters of Xarraca Bay, Six Senses Ibiza is a sprawling resort spread over 20 acres. It opened last summer.
With an emphasis on sustainability and wellbeing, the hotel has its own farm, a 400-year-old olive press that supplies organic produce to its restaunrants, as well as a first-class subterranean spa, with biohacking treatments on tap for its wellness warrior guests.
But that doesn’t mean it’s all self-improvement and no play. New for 2022, the resort has just launched its beach caves, which are a hub for authentic Ibizan eccentricity and a healthy dose of hedonism.
Where is it?
While it feels utterly secluded, as you swing round the final bend of a very windy dirt track leading to the resort, it’s still only a 40-minute drive from the airport. Guests can enjoy a luxury private transfer in a Mercedes Vito electric for an additional €185.
Style
Taking influence from the surrounding bohemian north, historically the chosen hangout of Ibiza’s hippy crowd, the terracotta finca-style buildings blend seamlessly into the surrounding area. It was designed by architect and developer Jonathan Leitersdorf, and while the resort belongs to the prestigious Asian brand, Six Senses Ibiza very much feels like a one-of-a-kind.
As you enter the huge open-air double floor lobby area, with an olive tree centrepiece and open front looking out onto the rest of the sea, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome from Hawaiian shirt-clad hosts offering sparkling wine. Everyone gets the VIP treatment here, but there’s no denying this is a celebrity hangout. When we visited in May, Duran Duran were staying as they opened Ushuaïa, and were presumably making use of the hotel’s new recording studio at the recently opened beach caves. Overseen by hospitality wizard Ben Pundole, the caves boast a bar and restaurant, a perfect spot for grazing over a long lunch wth plenty of rose and long margarita-fuelled nights, with live music and DJs.
And what the hotel lacks in actual beach (though there is access to the water for sea swimming), it more than makes up for with its gorgeous infinity pool, where you can enjoy superb people watching while scoffing melt-in-your-mouth sushi and supping killer cocktails from Pharmacy Bar.
Which room?
With 137 different guest accommodation options, including townhouses, mansions and pool suites with up to 10 bedrooms, guests can choose a suite or villa to suit their needs. Most feature private terraces overlooking the ocean, some with boujee extras, like an in-villa chef.
The most recent additions are the five cave suites, which are etched into the rock face right on the water. This paradisical setting got your creative juices flowing? The Cave Royale features a secret door leading to the recording studio, should inspiration strike mid slumber.
Rooms are chic and minimalist with light beachwood furniture in an open-plan setting. Bathrooms come with a large freestanding tub.
Our seafront-facing junior suite featured floor-to-ceiling windows which opened right out, while on the terraces golden Ibizan light dapples through the bamboo awning, making a magical setting for sundowners or equally morning sun salutations.
Food & drink
Israeli chef Eyal Shani has curated outstanding menus at the hotel’s restaurants that celebrate the vegetables grown at the Six Senses farm in Santa Gertrudis. There’s the Farmers’ Market and Orchard, a chilled out setting where guests can enjoy an fizz-fuelled buffet breakfast, should you be so inclined, and peruse the different stalls, including a healthy juice and hot shot bar, Dalgona coffee shop, bakery, and pinchos station, as well as a fantastic wood-fired pizzeria Everything is made using minimal sugar, gluten and lactose products.
Inspired by Shani’s native Tel Aviv, HaSalon offers Mediterranean dishes and mezzes using produce sourced from the land, from eggs laid by the hotel’s own chickens to locally-caught seafood and reared meat, all paired with biodynamic wines, while for a daytime shot of goodness, Pharmacy Bar serves up detox juices and mocktails.
Spa & wellness
The high-tech spa at Six Senses is in a class of its own and a central component to the ethos of the hotel. Set across 1,200 square meters, accessible via a discrete winding staircase, you’d never even know it was there. I kicked off my stay with a session in leg compression booties, which promote lymphatic drainage, and is the perfect antidote to any plane-induced puffiness. As was the cryotherapy mask, which blasts shots of freezing cold air onto your face to enhance bloodflow, tighten and plump. In a deeply serene setting, directly overlooking the sea, this is where you can also have IV infusions to rehydrate if you’ve hit it hard the night before.
In addition to the usual menu of Six Senses massages and facials on offer, guests can opt in for highly-tailored wellness programmes for the duration of their stay. Starting with blood testing to check for deficiencies, practitioners will put together a daily plan of nutrition, exercise and therapies to ensure you leave your best self. For those who struggle to sit still on holiday, there’s a daily schedule of classes in the cardio studio and on the yoga deck (do catch the sunset session) and a boxing ring, as well as a caldarium, sauna, steam room, hammam and gym. In September, a new biohacking suite will open for the more hardcore wellness junkies.
What to Instagram
Where to start, frankly you’ll want to get it all on the ‘gram, but do look out for the shamanic cleansing ritual which happens each evening at dusk.
Best for...
