Six people charged after Met Police probe into banned Kurdistan terror group

Six people have been charged following a police investigation into suspected activity linked to a banned Kurdistan terror group.

The Metropolitan Police said Turkan Ozcan, 59, Mazlum Sayak, 27, Berfin Kerban, 31, Ali Boyraz, 62, Ercan Akbal, 56, and Agit Karatas, 23, have been charged with being members of the proscribed group known as the PKK.

They will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

All six were arrested at separate addresses in dawn raids before being detained under the Terrorism Act and remained in custody last month as part of a probe into the proscribed Kurdistan Workers Party.

Searches took place at eight addresses including the Kurdish community centre in Haringey, north London, where the Met said the search operation would take up to two weeks.

Protesters gathered near the community centre following the first six arrests and additional officers were consequently deployed to the area, the Met reported.

Four people at the protest were arrested but the arrests were not directly connected to the counter-terrorism probe, it said.

A 31-year-old man who was arrested as part of the investigation into the suspected activity has been released without charge, the force said.

Acting Commander Helen Flanagan, from the Met’s Counter-Terrorism Command, said: “We fully recognise the concern and impact this investigation has had upon the local community and we continue to work closely with local policing colleagues to keep them updated.

“The charges brought about in this case are very serious and come about following an extensive investigation by our detectives.

“It is important that communities right across London know that where we suspect any kind of potential terrorist activity, then we will look to investigate and take action to disrupt that in order to keep everybody safe.”
