The Six Nations is set to be the subject of a new Netflix documentary that will look to emulate the phenomenal success of Formula One's Drive to Survive , according to reports.
City A.M. report a deal is close to being signed that will take viewers inside the dressing rooms and beyond of all the competing nations. It comes after England and Wales finally decided to lift their ban on cameras being allowed into their inner sanctum.
Wales have always refused to open their doors fully, but that looks like it is about to change in a big way if the deal comes off. It's thought the BBC and ITV will also have more access then ever before in their regular coverage of the Championship.
The report states the documentary could now begin filming early next year when the 2023 tournament begins. The move would be designed to grow the sport's fanbase around the world.
Formula One has seen a dramatic increase in popularity in recent years, with the no-holds-barred series giving fans real insight into the teams, stars and feuds on and off the track.
Amazon Prime have also made their mark in sporting documentaries, with a series of All or Nothing programmes focussing on some of the biggest teams in the Premier League. The All Blacks rugby team have also been the subject of their own series.
“If Netflix are going to be investing in this, they will want to get it out before the World Cup,” Ben Uttley, former director of British and Irish Lions documentaries, told City A.M.
“The only alternative would be to do a longer running series where they try and pick up the momentum from after the World Cup which would be a much longer commitment. I’m not quite sure if the audience is big enough for Netflix to invest [in that option] heavily.”
