Six Nations ratings: How Scotland players performed in defeat to France

Stuart Hogg: Defiant in defence and determined in attack, the full-back epitomised the attitude that took Scotland ever so close to a dramatic victory. 8 out of 10

Kyle Steyn: Worked hard in defence and like Van der Merwe had no chance to get a clear run at the French in the wide channels. 7

Huw Jones: Enjoying the best form of his career to date, the Warriors centre scored two tries and was an ever-present threat to the French. 9

Sione Tuipulotu: His misplaced pass brought one attack to an end, but on the whole he made a big contribution, above all in the understanding he continues to show with Jones. 8

Duhan van der Merwe: Astutely policed by France’s wide defence, the winger did not get a real chance to show off his powerful running. 7

Finn Russell: Bounced back from an egregious error which gifted a try to Ramos, scoring a try of his own and converting all three of his team’s touchdowns. 8

Ben White: Continues to set new standards for consistency and excellence in attack, and was just as impressive in defence, holding Dumortier up over the line. 8

Pierre Schoeman: The Edinburgh loosehead revelled in the big occasion and If anything was even more dynamic than he has been in recent games. 8

George Turner: Some brilliant support at the breakdown kept several Scotland attacks going, although he did end another with a knock-on. 7

Zander Fagerson: Centimetres short of scoring in the first half just before France’s third try, the Warriors tighthead was a powerful ball-carrier before giving way to WP Nel. 8

Richie Gray: Diligent and undemonstrative as usual in defence, he combined well with brother Jonny and seemed to steadily get on top of his opposite numbers. 7

Grant Gilchrist: Had little chance to get involved in the game before he was sent off for making contact with the head of Anthony Jelonch with his shoulder. An error that might well have proved far more costly for Scotland but for Haouas’ subsequent dismissal. 4

Jamie Ritchie: Remained composed even after France had gone 19-0 ahead, and stuck to his guns by insisting on going for tries not three points from kickable penalties. 8

Hamish Watson: Sacrificed after Gilchrist’s early dismissal in order to let Jonny Gray on to shore up the pack. 5

Matt Fagerson: Helped keep Dupont subdued for part of the game and also played his part in Scotland’s second-half resurgence. 8

Best of the rest

Jonny Gray: Teamed up well with brother Richie after early appearance off the bench. 7

Ali Price: Lively cameo appearance gave Scotland some extra energy late in the game. 7
