A 6-month-old baby girl was found abandoned in Times Square late Tuesday night.

New York Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a possible child abuse situation just after 11 p.m. near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, according to the department. When officers arrived, they discovered the child alone in a stroller.

The baby was conscious and alert at the scene and was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital for evaluation.

The child was last seen with a man who police believe is her father, who frequents the Times Square area, WABC reports. Investigators have been canvassing the area, showing people the baby’s photo and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to track his movements leading up to the incident.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Under New York State’s Abandoned Infant Protection Act, a parent can legally leave a newborn, up to 30 days old, at a safe location such as a hospital, firehouse or police station without facing prosecution. However, because the child in this case is 6 months old, those protections would not apply. Parents of older babies should contact the Administration for Children's Services to transfer custody or give up parental rights.

Abandoning a child under the age of 14 is a felony in New York.

The Independent has contacted the NYPD for comment.
