Six Man Utd players who left in summer window - and how they've fared so far

Manchester United's change in the dugout this summer invariably bought about a change in the playing group as Erik ten Hag seeks to put his stamp on things.

Players came in and players went out with an acceptance that there was a need for an overhaul. Last season's horror show highlighted issues throughout the squad that will take more than one window to address. But Ten Hag identified the players he wanted to move on and acted accordingly.

Headline names have struggled to cut it at Old Trafford such has been the atmosphere around the club over the past decade. That said, not all were bad players and several have gone on to enjoy impressive careers elsewhere. Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao among them.

We take a look at the names who departed the red half of Manchester this summer to see how they've fared since with things seemingly on the rise under Ten Hag at the Theatre of Dreams.

Paul Pogba

A club-record arrival leaves for nothing is the transaction to sum up the last ten years in Manchester. Contract talks were shelved last term with Pogba's deal running down and he was allowed to pick his next destination once the summer came round. A return to Juventus had long been touted and that was his choice.

It was in Turin that a young Pogba initially thrived with Max Allegri at the helm. The Italian tactician is back in the dugout and plotting Juventus' return with the return of the midfielder a huge coup. The Frenchman limped off with injury late last season and remains on the mend, so is yet to play competitively for the Old Lady.

Dean Henderson

The goalkeeper left but didn't go quietly as he lamented his role as the team's No 2 - but having talked the talk he is now walking the walk. He made a loan switch to Nottingham Forest, but is set for an interesting return in less than 12 months time. Playing for a club that is fighting off relegation, Henderson was always going to ship goals.

Already though his performances have helped his team win games, saving a penalty from Declan Rice in the success over West Ham United. He's also kept out a Harry Kane spot kick - which is no mean feat. David de Gea has already made one howler this term with Henderson underlining his quality at the City Ground.

Edinson Cavani

The forward endured a frustrating second year in Manchester with his ambitions hampered by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, which left him playing second fiddle. He so often produced when called upon but allowed his contract to run down and is now playing in Spain with Valencia.

Despite being 35, Cavani's instincts in the final third are still as effective as ever, although he is yet to play for his new employers. Injuries were often an issue in Manchester, which was partly down to his age, but letting him leave may not have been the worst decision made.

Jesse Lingard

The midfielder followed Henderson to Nottingham having also ran down his contract. Minutes were at a premium in Manchester and Lingard rebuffed the offer of a new deal and had the pick of his next destination, which may thought would be a return to West Ham.

Instead he chose Forest, but despite his obvious quality Lingard is yet to prove that he could be one that United let go prematurely. The versatile midfielder is yet to score or have any major influence on a game despite his huge financial demands, which have divided opinion.

Nemanja Matic

The midfield linchpin has joined up with Jose Mourinho for a third time in his career after moving to Roma in the summer. Yet another player who left for nothing once his contract ended - announcing he would be departing before the season had even finished.

Since heading to the Italian capital the Serbian has made seven appearances in all competitions, starting in three Serie A games. Roma have won four of their six games, although Matic did start in the surprising 4-0 reverse at the hands of Udinese.

James Garner

A player who had been tipped for a bright future following spells away on loan, most recently at Forest, where he played a key role in their promotion. Garner only made seven first team outings for United before a deadline day move to Everton, where he is likely to get more opportunities.

Garner set the Toffees back £15m and time will tell whether or not United let go a talent they should've retained, but he is yet to play for the Merseyside outfit, who have only played once since his move. Frank Lampard is not blessing with midfield options which could assist the 21-year-old's development.
