Polio has been discovered in London following a routine treatment works inspection. A national incident has been declared by the UK Health Security Agency following the find in Beckton Sewage Treatment Works.
The disease was considered eradicated in the UK in 2003. However the latest discovery which found traces of the virus was between February and May this year, reports The Mirror.
These have continued to evolve and are now being classified as "vaccine-derived" poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2). Experts are currently looking to see what risk there is to the general public of them contracting polio.
