Six highlights of Bruno Guimaraes career so far which Newcastle United fans will love

Newcastle fans are hoping for great things from marquee January signing Bruno Guimaraes.

But the £38 million Brazilian already boasts an impressive array of career highlights.

Here are six of the biggest moments so far for a player who will surely add class and energy to a one-paced United midfield.

Winning gold

Bruno made six appearances at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics last summer as Brazil marched all the way to the final – and a 2-1 victory over Spain.

His crucial role in a youthful Brazil side means he is the second Olympic gold medalist to play for Newcastle after Fabricio Coloccini.

First silverware

Bruno’s first senior trophy was the 2018 Copa Sudamericana – South America’s version of the Europa League – with Atletico Paranaense.

Although Paranaense beat Colomboan side Junior FC in the final, it was their two-legged semi-final victory over Brazilian rivals Fluminense which was most memorable . . . capped by a Guimaraes goal.

Standing out from the crowd

At just turned 22, Bruno was named in the Brazilian Serie A select XI - Brazil’s version of the PFA team of the year – in 2019.

Pablo Mari, who subsequently signed for Arsenal, was among the other players voted into the select team.

Moving to Europe

His performances in his homeland attracted the interest of French side Lyon who signed him for £18 million in 2020. In joining Lyon, Guimaraes followed in the footsteps of one of his idols, Juninho Pernambucano.

National recognition

It only lasted a couple of minutes, but Bruno made his senior Brazil national team debut on November 18, 2020 in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win against Uruguay.

Douglas Luiz – now at Aston Villa – was the player Guimaraes replaced.

He looks likely to be a key component for Brazil at this year’s World Cup.

Outclassing PSG

Newcastle fans looking for proof of Guimaraes’ class need only look back three weeks to a man-of-the-match performance for Lyon against the might of PSG.

Outclassing an opposition midfield that included Marco Verratti and Georginio Wijnaldum, Bruno produced one of the passes of the Ligue 1 season to set up Lyon’s goal for fellow Brazilian, Lucas Paqueta.
