Six essential money tips to help protect your finances while holidaying abroad this year

The unexpected cold weather snap may just be the nudge you need to book a holiday abroad this year to soak up some summer sun and take a breather from the cost of living crisis. Or, if you set your alarm bright and early on Thursday, March 9, you might be able to snag some bargain flights when Easyjet launches its Christmas 2023 sale and enjoy some winter sun.

On the latest episode of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, the consumer champion explained that the sale will offer discounts on certain flights booked between December 1, 2023 and March 23, 2024. He told STV viewers that Easyjet ticket pricing is “demand-based” which means the more people buying, the higher the price goes up.

He suggested that anyone hoping to book a bargain break should check the website regularly between 5am and 7am - but couldn’t guarantee success.

But whether you get a discount or already have a holiday planned, one thing you shouldn’t forget about is protecting your finances while abroad.

To help holidaymakers have a trip to remember and not one they would rather forget, money experts at Sambla have shared six essential tips to help protect your finances while abroad this year.

1. Monitor your accounts

It’s important to regularly check your accounts while travelling, especially if you’re using debit or credit cards. Make sure that all transactions are legitimate and that no unauthorised charges have been made. If you notice any suspicious activity, contact your bank immediately.

2. Be aware of scams

When travelling abroad, it’s important to be aware of common scams and fraud schemes. Be careful when dealing with strangers and never give out personal information or cash to anyone you don’t know. It’s also wise to research potential tourist scams in your destination before travelling so that you can be prepared for any situation.

3. Use safety precautions when using ATMs

ATMs can be a great convenience when travelling, but it’s important to take caution when using them. Before using an ATM, make sure that it is located in a secure area and that there are no suspicious individuals nearby. It’s also a good idea to cover your hand when entering your PIN number to prevent onlookers from seeing it.

4. Securely store your documents

It is highly recommended to keep all of your important documents in a secure location. This includes your passport, driver’s licence, and other forms of identification. If possible, keep these items in a locked suitcase or safe at all times while travelling. Alternatively, a money belt is a cheap investment and great alternative if you're unable to leave your valuables at the hotel.

5. Be aware of credit card fees and exchange rates

When travelling abroad, it’s important to be aware of any potential fees associated with credit cards and exchange rates. Many countries have different policies regarding credit card usage and exchange rates, so it’s important to familiarise yourself with them before departing on your trip.

6. Invest in travel insurance

Travel insurance is an invaluable resource for travellers who want to ensure their financial security while away from home. Investing in travel insurance can help cover any unexpected medical costs or lost luggage expenses that may arise during your trip.

Martin Lewis’ key rule here is to book “ASAB” - As Soon As You Book as this will protect you from the moment you book your holiday - find out more here.
