They met at the dancing as 12-year-old girls, and more than seven decades later, six Dumfries women are still the best of pals.
Now all aged 84, Morag Johnstone, Jeanette McNaught, May Foster, Jean McDowall, Margaret Black and Margaret Biggar say their lifetime of friendship has been something “very special” for them all.
Morag said: “We call ourselves The 1939 Girls because that’s the year we were born.
“We met at the YWCA when we were 12 and went to the dancing together.
“We’ve been best pals ever since and I don’t know anyone else who has had friendships lasting this amount of time.”
Instead of going to the dancing, these days the ladies meet at least once a week and enjoy spending every Tuesday together at The Caven Arms in the town.
Morag added: “We grew up together, got married around the same time and are all still with the same husbands – none of them are dead yet!
“We had our children around the same time as each other and have shared all the ups and downs of life and enjoyed celebrating special occasions like big birthdays and anniversaries.
“We’ve always been there for each other and that is something very special for us all.
“They’re the best pals you could wish for and it would be nice to see our picture together in the Standard before one of us is deid!”
