Six protests in Bristol today as Extinction Rebellion and Bristol Airport campaigns take to streets

Six protests are expected to take place in Bristol city centre today (Saturday, February 12), as a bumper weekend of activism is set to take place.

Climate campaigners, anti-airport expansion activists and Buddhists protesting Barclays are all set to take to the streets on the same day.

The first demonstration is against the recent decision to allow Bristol Airport to expand its annual number of passengers from 10 million to 12 million per year.

The news has been criticised by some people including climate campaigners, and a protest will take place on College Green from 10.30am until 12pm.

The organisers have said it is an "opportunity for us to come together to show our sheer disgust at the decision that overturns the will of the local community and ignores the wellbeing of the environment."

At 11.30am, another protest organised to show support for refugees will start by the fountains opposite Bristol Hippodrome.

It will be a Valentine's Day themed protest with displays of orange hearts, banners, placards, and music to encourage people to "show your heart" on the issue of refugees.

It is expected to take place until 1pm and will focus on the government's nationality and borders bill which is currently going through parliament, and which the organisers have said is a "profound attack on the rights of refugees and a threat to the civil liberties of us all."

At 12pm, climate activists known as 'Youth Climate Swarm' will be taking action by blocking roads in several locations in the city centre for seven minutes at a time.

Activist Torin Menzies said that he is protesting because we "cannot continue to accept the role that the destructive and ecocidal oil industry plays in our society."

This will be followed by a demonstration against the cost of living crisis, which is expected to start on College Green at 1pm.

Anti-austerity protesters will speak out against a rise in energy bills and the "deepest cost of living crisis since 1990", as part of a national day of action across cities in the UK.

Then, another protest will start at 2pm outside Sports Direct in Broadmead.

Football players from the Easton Cowgirls will join pro-Palestine activists in asking people to boycott sports clothing brand Puma because of their sponsorship of the Israeli Football Association.

And finally, Buddhists from the climate campaign group Extinction Rebellion are set to stage a protest against banking group Barclays.

The Buddhists will gather in Castle Park at 2.30pm before staging a "meditation walk" towards the Barclays in Broadmead and a "meditation sit" outside the bank.

The activists say they will be "bearing witness to the disastrous impact of Barclays continuing investments in fossil fuels on the people of the global south."
