Six cars damaged on city centre lane amid 'increasing' antisocial behaviour

Six cars were damaged on a city centre laneway amid increasing antisocial behaviour believed to be caused by the return of nightlife.

Wing mirrors were knocked off six cars parked on a laneway just off Camden Street.

Residents say antisocial behaviour has increased since the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions on late bars and nightclubs. Complaints include "damaged property, public urination, vomit outside houses, increasing litter and broken glass" as well as late night singing.

In an email to Dublin City Council, which was seen by Dublin Live, a resident of Long Lane called on the Local Authority to take action.

They said: "Six cars were vandalised early Saturday morning (30 April) on Long Lane– wing mirrors kicked, damaged or completely smashed off. Reports have been made to Kevin Street Garda station.

"Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. Since [the] easing of restrictions and a return of ‘nocturnal’ habits on Camden Street, we’ve experienced an increased frequency of anti-social behaviour. Damaged cars/ property, public urination, vomit outside houses, increasing litter and broken glass on the Lane. Also, we’re regularly woken by late night singing/ shouting."

The concerned resident added that the incidents are not limited to the night.

He added: "I would like to think the above behaviour only happens at night; but recently, in broad daylight, (i) an elderly lady was followed/ mugged on the Lane and (ii) a house had an attempted break-in."

The local pleaded with the Council to introduce new CCTV, improved street lighting and increased street cleaning.

A spokeswoman for the gardai said the incident was being investigated.

She said: "Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred on Long Lane in Dublin 8 on 30 th April 2022 at approximately 3.45am.

"A vehicle was damaged during the incident.

She added that "investigations are ongoing into this matter."
