Sir Rod Stewart pays tribute to Queen as he mourns loss of brother in same week

Sir Rod Stewart paid tribute to the Queen's incredible 70-year reign as he announced his big brother Don also passed away this week.

The musician told fans on Twitter last night his sibling died at the age of 94 in what has been a "devastating 48 hours" for himself and the nation.

Her Majesty passed away peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon and tributes have poured in from across the entertainment, sporting, and political world.

Sir Rod performed at the Platinum Party in the Palace earlier this year to celebrate the reign of the nation's longest serving Sovereign, who is now succeeded by her son, King Charles III.

The gig took place at Buckingham Palace in London on a specially constructed 360 degree stage, and fans were overjoyed to see Rod performing some of his biggest hits - as well as UK anthem Sweet Caroline - as Prince George and Prince William sang along and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall waved their flags.

It was a more sombre time of reflection this week however for the singer, as he joined the rest of the nation in paying tribute.

Sir Rod said the Queen is a "shining star that will never fade in our hearts and souls".

He added: "It has been a devastating 48 hours. My brother Don passed on Tuesday at 94 and today Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at 96. Like Don, the Queen has been a presence all through my life as a great unifier. A shining star that will never fade in our hearts and souls."

As 12 days of national mourning begins, famous Scots have led tributes to the Queen.

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling said: "Some may find the outpouring of British shock and grief at this moment quaint or odd, but millions felt affection and respect for the woman who uncomplainingly filled her constitutional role for seventy years.

"Most British people have never known another monarch, so she’s been a thread winding through all our lives. She did her duty by the country right up until her dying hours, and became an enduring, positive symbol of Britain all over the world. She’s earned her rest."

Decorated Olympian Sir Chris Hoy remembered his own encounters with the Queen, saying: "I share the sadness and sorrow of all Britons and many others around the world in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I had the pleasure of meeting Her Majesty on a number of occasions and always admired her tremendous dedication and absolute commitment to her role, as well as the generosity and compassion she offered to all those she met.

"Her Majesty The Queen devoted her to our country, guiding us through so many historically significant moments with great leadership. My thoughts are with the Royal family at this very sad time."

Broadcaster Lorraine Kelly added: "So sad. What a life of service and duty. incredibly honoured to have met her. Always been there my whole life. Thoughts with her family and everyone who loved her."

She also described the Queen as a "bad ass", after discovering the monarch was the only person allowed to drive in the UK without a licence.

Telly chef Gordon Ramsay shared a tribute on Instagram. He wrote: "You will be so missed, a truly remarkable woman who gave so much to us all in Great Britain and worldwide. So humble, selfless and giving. Someone who made such an impact on us all over her decades of service. Rest in perfect peace your Majesty."

Former Scottish Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was one of the 15 leaders of the UK the Queen witnesses, said: "The United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the entire world are joined together in mourning this evening. HM Queen Elizabeth II served this country to the last. I offer my sincere condolences to the Royal Family. May she rest in peace."
