Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopes Manchester United deal will be done by mid-February - but is coy on January influence

Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopes his deal to buy a 25 per cent stake in Manchester United will be official by the middle of February.

Ratcliffe is awaiting Premier League approval after INEOS last month completed a £1.03billion deal to take a minority stake at Old Trafford.

Speaking to journalists at Old Trafford before United’s Premier League game against Tottenham on Sunday, billionaire Ratcliffe said: “Early to mid-Feb, we hope. We hope they don’t find anything dodgy in our CV!”

Sunday marked the first time Ratcliffe watched United in his new role.

“I can’t come all the time because I have a few other things to manage, but I’ll come quite a lot,” said Ratcliffe, a boyhood United fan.

Asked how long he has had dreams of owning a stake in United, Ratcliffe said: “A few years. It’s taken a few turns along the road, as you know, but it all turned out well in the end.”

Ratcliffe added: “I am very excited to be here, but I can't answer any questions, really, because that would be inappropriate, honestly.

“It's a big match... we normally do well against Spurs!"

Asked if his deal to come in at United is as exciting as anything he has ever done, Ratcliffe smiled and said: "Correct. Yes.

Ratcliffe also said he "can't comment" when he was about his influence on the January transfer window.
