Sir Elton John to receive 'gravity defying' figure at Madame Tussauds

A new wax work of Sir Elton John will take centre stage at Madame Tussauds to honour the singer’s 50-year career.

The sculpture of the Rocketman singer suspended mid-air in his signature keyboard handstand move will celebrate his “out-of-the-world stage presence,” the museum said.

It is one of the museum’s most complex structural designs to date and behind-the scenes images and videos have been released showing studio artists crafting Sir Elton’s figure.

The megastar was first sculpted by Madame Tussauds in 1976 and he later became the museum’s first talking and smiling figure. The sculpture included voice recordings from the pianist and singer himself.

The new wax work will launch in Madame Tussaud’s Impossible Festival music zone later this year.

The line-up includes Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Amy Winehouse, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.

Earlier this year, Sir Elton became the 19th performer to earn the coveted EGOT status – a winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

His headline set at Glastonbury in 2023 marked his last UK performance as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

He was honoured with the Legacy award at this year’s Attitude Awards.

Steve Blackburn, General Manager at Madame Tussauds London, said: “We’ve been creating figures of Sir Elton John since the beginning of his legendary career, and he has always inspired us to go above and beyond in our creations.

“Back in the 1970s, his first figure was our first talking figure, and in 2024 we’re determined to go big again.

“The figure’s iconic, gravity-defying pose will capture the essence of Elton’s legendary early performances in a way that only Madame Tussauds London can.

“This will be our most structurally complex figure to date in our centuries-old history and it is going to be a real showstopper when we unveil it later this year.”
