Sir Elton John's partner David Furnish says music icon is 'great' and 'battling on' as he issues health update

Sir Elton John’s husband David Furnish has provided an update on his partner’s health.

The popstar, 78, contracted a severe eye infection left him blind in one eye and with limited vision in the other - and now Furnish has said Elton is “great” and battling on”.

Speaking to Variety, Furnish also said he was focusing on spending time at home with the couple's sons Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13.

“He's happy being at home as a family with our sons. That's why he came off the road.

“We really love parenting, we love our family, and we love being together, and that's everything for us.”

In November, the 78-year-old music icon opened up about the impact the condition has had since he contracted the infection in July 2024.

“It’s been devastating,” he said. “Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything.”

The star said he had been undergoing treatment and has started to see “some improvements” in his left eye, but admitted progress has been slow.

“I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one,” he added to Variety, comparing the need for resilience to the early days of the AIDS crisis. “You mustn’t give up hope… you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things.”

The singer announced his sight issues publicly in September 2024.

At the time, he said he had been “recuperating at home” over the summer. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process,” he wrote on Instagram. “I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me.”

He ended his touring career in 2023 and has since scaled back public appearances. His health setbacks have also meant no new music in the immediate future.
