Sir Andy Murray 'incredibly irritated' by Cristiano Ronaldo distraction in Australian Open win

Andy Murray has admitted that he found Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired outbursts during his first-round win in the Australian Open win 'incredibly irritating'.

The 36-year-old's infamous "SIU" celebration has become synonymous with the Manchester United attacker and recent trends on social media platforms have led to it being used outside the confines of football stadiums.

The inception of the celebration, of course, originated from when the Portugal international scored a goal, he reels off to the corner flag and performs the celebration to an ensemble of SIU's from supporters.

But it isn't just the former British number one who has found the crossover of football into tennis exasperating with fellow star Nick Kyrios joining in on the complaints.

"I think it's like 'Siuu' or something that Ronaldo does when he scores," Murray said speaking after his five-set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

"And, yeah, it was incredibly irritating (smiling). Yeah, I think that's what they were doing."

He continued: "Initially, I thought it was [booing], because there were some people booing during my practice yesterday.

"I had no idea what for. Yeah, so originally that's what I thought it was."

Kyrgios, who is playing in his home country's Grand Slam, was in disbelief that the chant continued for nearly three hours during his win over Liam Broady.

“I can’t believe they did it so much,” he added.

“They were doing some Ronaldo thing. Ronaldo does it every time he scores. I thought they were going to do it for like 10 minutes. They did it for two-and-a-half hours, like every point. I don’t know why, but I don’t know. It was a zoo out there.”
