Sir Alex Ferguson has delivered Mauricio Pochettino verdict amid Manchester United manager plan

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already outlined what managerial qualities Mauricio Pochettino would bring to Old Trafford, as the club continues its search for their next permanent manager.

Pochettino has been installed as one of the frontrunners to take over from current interim manager Ralf Rangnick this summer and was heavily linked with taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in November. The Argentine was keen to pick up the baton mid-season but Paris Saint-Germain turned down United's advances.

The PSG chief, however, has remained at the very front of United's thoughts, likewise Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, as the club continues to put together a plan to source their next boss. United football director John Murtough has confirmed that the search is ongoing and they want to install a manager that can help bring silverware back to Old Trafford.

"We know that consistency is key as we strive for a top-four finish this season," Murtough said, speaking on Tuesday. "I want to reiterate however that this is not the ultimate objective for Manchester United, and everyone at the club is focused on challenging for the top trophies.

"We are now conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a new permanent manager who will take charge this summer, with the objective to get us back to challenging for those domestic and European titles."

With United set to task their new manager with big ambitions, they will be looking to install a boss with both great pedigree and understanding of what is expected. Although Pochettino has only won two trophies during his managerial career, he ticks no shortage of boxes.

He did a terrific job at Tottenham Hotspur and was unfortunate to be sacked in November 2019. He, for a time, turned them into genuine title contenders and guided them to their first-ever Champions League final.

Furthermore, his work at Spurs, just two years in, was hailed by former United boss Ferguson. He hailed his understanding of developing English players and displaying levels of "composure" for a manager.

"Well, the manager has been fantastic," Ferguson admitted, speaking back in April 2016. "They have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that.

"They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure. You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing.

"The most important thing for English football is how many English and young players are in his team. He understands the advantage of playing young people.

"They won't let you down and they have been fantastic. [Dele] Alli, [Harry] Kane, [Ryan] Mason, [Danny] Rose, [Eric] Dier, all English players. [Kyle] Walker, the right back, although he has been there for a bit longer."

Pochettino, throughout his time at Tottenham, was not afraid to blood young, English talent into his squad, such as the likes of Alli, amongst others. With that said, the likes of Ethan Laird, Brandon Williams and James Garner could all prosper at United next season if Pochettino is installed as Solskjaer's permanent replacement.
