Sinn Féin pledges £230 to every household as party launches Stormont Assembly election manifesto

Sinn Féin has pledged to give £230 to every household in Northern Ireland as part of its Stormont Assembly election manifesto.

Tackling the cost of living crisis and supporting the health service are their "top priorities", the party said as they launched their pitch to the electorate.

Sinn Féin would provide a "progressive First Minister for all" if they become the largest party in next week's poll, deputy leader Michelle O'Neill said.

The republican party denied downplaying ambitions for a united Ireland in response to the DUP claiming their rivals would use the First Minister post to push for a "divisive" border poll.

Ms O'Neill said she wanted people to be able to make an "informed decision about the constitutional future", citing Brexit as a "really good example of how not to do things".

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald did not propose a firm date for a potential referendum, but said they believed "significant change will happen in the course of this decade".

And she said political unionism was making a mistake to "fetishise the border in the Irish Sea and the Protocol", as the party insisted there are economic opportunities arising from the post-Brexit trade arrangements.

Sinn Féin is fielding the most candidates in the Assembly election with 34. Polls suggest the party could be on course to become the largest in the Assembly and be entitled to take up the First Minister post.

Finance Minister Conor Murphy said £334million of unallocated Stormont funding could be used to "take some of the pressure off struggling workers and families".

He said: "From day one after this election Sinn Féin will be ready to form an Executive and to work with others to put money into people's pockets.

"Our plan includes a £230 payment for every household in the north at £177million."

He continued: "The election itself is about making politics work, and we want to work with others to deliver effective government and to deliver progressive change to ensure that we can deliver good public services.

"We want to get £1billion out the door to strengthen the health service, to support workers and families with the cost of living crisis, to give £230 to every household in the north, and focus on creating new jobs."

Launching their manifesto at The Mac in Belfast, Ms O'Neill said her party was seeking "partnership, not division with unionism".

She added: "If the electorate decide, then Sinn Féin will take up the reins and lead an agenda for change at Stormont, with a progressive First Minister for all."

On a possible future border poll, Ms McDonald rejected the DUP's characterisation of any vote being "divisive" and called on the governments to "begin planning for change now".

Asked about timescales on when Sinn Féin would want to see an Irish unity referendum, she said: "We often refer to this as the decade of opportunity. We believe that significant change will happen in the course of this decade."

She added: "As people who believe in the future of this country, we will always set out a position that a united Ireland, a new Ireland, works for everybody, can work for everybody.

"It's not divisive. In fact, the proposition is a very inclusive one."

Ms O'Neill said it would be "reckless to not plan for unity" and that "Brexit is a really good example of how not to do things".

She added: "We want people to have the information in which to make an informed decision about the constitutional future."
