Single-use plastic items including cutlery, plates, and polystyrene cups are set to be banned in England. The move could come in place before the end of 2023.
Environment Secretary Therese Coffey is to announce the move which aims to cut down on single-use items that end up in rivers and seas and harm wildlife. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said it comes in response to a public consultation on a plan to ban the supply of single-use plastic items and polystyrene food and drink containers.
Ms Coffey said it would have a “huge impact”, telling the Mail on Sunday: “A plastic fork can take 200 years to decompose – that is two centuries in landfill or polluting our oceans. I am determined to drive forward action to tackle this issue head on.
