Single mum withholding her rent after living in damp Johnstone council flat for 11 years

A single mum has insisted she is "at her wits' end" after living in a damp Johnstone flat for 11 years.

Janice Anderson, 48, said she no longer knows where to turn and is withholding her rent from Renfrewshire Council after enduring ongoing problems with water coming into her property in Ladeside Drive since 2011.

Over the past week, her two-bedroom flat has been flooded and damaged flooring has been ripped up, while her elderly and disabled neighbour has had to evacuate his home.

But Ms Anderson - who usually pays £400-a-month in rent - has said this is not a new issue and she has reached breaking point, with the situation now affecting her physical and mental health.

Both she and her 20-year-old daughter Lauren are asthmatic and Ms Anderson is scared she will lose her job after having to call in sick for work on several occasions in recent weeks.

The council has offered her temporary accommodation elsewhere in the town while the problems are fixed.

But after already being decanted to another property a few years ago because of similar issues, Ms Anderson has insisted she does not have time to keep being moved around while trying to work 12-hour shifts and look after her daughter, who has temporarily moved out because of the constant problems including mould in her bedroom.

Ms Anderson - who does factory work during the week and is employed at a social club at weekends - said she will not accept anything less than an offer of permanent alternative accommodation.

She said: "I just do not know what to do anymore. This has been going on for 11 years.

"They have offered me temporary accommodation in Howwood Road or Cartside but I’m a single mum and I do not have time to be moving between properties. I’ve already done it.

"I have a full-time and part-time job and I work six days a week.

"I just think for all the years I have paid rent, that’s really the best they could do for me? I want permanent accommodation.

"I feel as if I am banging my head against a wall. The flat is infested with fruit flies and the walls and windows are all mouldy. I am embarrassed to have people over.

"I am just really angry at the council because I have been arguing with them for years and I can’t take anymore. I’ve been on and off inhalers and steroids and I’ve been hospitalised because of issues with my chest.

"It is mentally and physically affecting me and I am losing £100 a shift when I ring in sick. I am at my wits' end."

When the roof first started leaking in 2011, the council removed the chimneys and put in a new roof but Ms Anderson said the work had just led to more issues.

Her flat has a large garden and a garage and she claims the temporary properties she has been offered are not of the same standard.

Council bosses have said they have visited the property to make emergency repairs this week and do not think the recent roof leak is linked to previous dampness issues.

A council spokesman said: "We know this is a difficult and upsetting situation for Ms Anderson. Our team is always here to help and has offered Ms Anderson temporary accommodation while repairs are carried out on her property.

“Our housing services team visited Ms Anderson’s home to carry out emergency repairs on February 11, 14 and 15 and do not believe the recent roof leak is connected to previous dampness issues reported at the property.

“A building surveyor has carried out an inspection at the property to assess the roof and our repair officer will stay in touch with Ms Anderson to discuss carrying out more permanent roof repairs and works to reinstate flooring."
