Simple trick will revive rattan garden furniture and help it last years

With British summers being so unpredictable, one minute, we are enjoying the heatwave on our rattan furniture, and the next, it’s being beaten by torrential rain and stormy winds.

Experts at Online Sofa Shop have shared their cleaning hack that will make your Rattan furniture last years, and it’ll cost you less than £10.

Jeannette Hudson, furniture expert at Online Sofa Shop with over 15 years of experience, said: “A rattan sealer or lacquer is a protective coating specifically designed for rattan furniture. It serves several purposes including protection against moisture, prevention of stains and spills, enhanced durability and even protection from UV rays. Look for a specifically formulated rattan sealer or lacquer that is designed to protect the material without altering its natural appearance. This is usually around the £10 price mark, and will keep your rattan furniture last years longer”

To clean rattan furniture, you can follow these steps:

  1. Remove loose dirt and dust: Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently remove any loose dirt, dust, or debris from the rattan furniture. Make sure to reach into crevices and corners.

  2. Prepare a cleaning solution: Mix a mild detergent or dish soap with warm water in a bucket or basin. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the rattan material.

  3. Clean the furniture: Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the soapy water and wring it out to remove excess moisture. Gently scrub the rattan furniture, focusing on any areas with stains or grime. Avoid excessive scrubbing or applying too much water, as it can cause the rattan to become damaged or mouldy.

  4. Rinse with clean water: Use a separate clean cloth or sponge dampened with plain water to rinse off the soap residue from the furniture. Make sure to remove all traces of the cleaning solution.

  5. Dry the furniture: Wipe the rattan furniture with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess moisture. Allow the furniture to air dry in a well-ventilated area, but avoid placing it in direct sunlight or using artificial heat sources, as they can cause the rattan to warp or crack.

  6. Maintain regular cleaning: To keep your rattan furniture in good condition, it's recommended to clean it regularly, depending on how often it is used and the environmental conditions. Dusting and wiping it down with a damp cloth can help prevent the buildup of dirt and maintain its appearance.
