Simon Pegg said his close friendship with Tom Cruise has led to his Scots wife calling the Top Gun: Maverick star “his boyfriend”.
The actor, who starred with Hollywood superstar Cruise in the Mission Impossible (MI) series, admitted he shouts “Whooo-ooh!” every time he gets a text from his pal.
But his East-Kilbride born wife Maureen, 52, a music industry publicist, is not impressed and teases him about their unlikely bromance.
Pegg, 52, said: “He’s perhaps the only movie star left and he likes me because I make him laugh. I’ll pull him up on stuff and I can be frank with him.”
The Hot Fuzz and Star Trek actor, whose has appeared in three of the MI movies with Cruise, told how he has had “deep conversations and heart-to-hearts” with his famous friend.
Pegg added: “People have these opinions about him which are based entirely on gossip and he doesn’t really do anything to combat that.
“I say, ‘You know he risks his life for his audience?’ This isn’t a hollow Hollywood boast. All the stunts for Mission: Impossible – Fallout were real. No CGI, no trickery, no kidding. He’s doing those stunts, flying those helicopters, making those jumps.”
Pegg is amazed by Cruise’s ability to handle fame. He said: “He understands the price for the level of movie star he is.”
Pegg has claimed that straight-talking Maureen, who he met on a bus on the way home from an airport, keeps him grounded.
