Simon Jordan says Newcastle United only big in Newcastle and are '20 years behind' top-six rivals

Simon Jordan says Newcastle United must try to catch up on 20 years of building a brand that their top-six rivals have built. The former Crystal Palace owner has warned the Magpies they're years behind Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Arsenal in their commercial operation.

His comments will not exactly come as a surprise to Newcastle supporters with the club rebuilding behind the scenes following Mike Ashley's tenure as owner. Darren Eales was appointed as Magpies CEO back in July 2022, with Peter Silverstone appointed as Chief Commercial Officer in October having left Arsenal.

The Toon have made a concentrated effort to improve their income streams in order to comply with Financial Fair Play. However, Jordan warns the Magpies are 'only big in Newcastle' as they look to grow their global brand.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: “Newcastle have got 20 years to catch up with the brands of clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League. They are going to spend a lot of money to do that but they are nowhere near.

“Right now, Newcastle are doing very well in the league but as a commercial operation with global eyes on the prize, they aren’t anywhere near the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Arsenal.”

Jordan continued: “Again, I maintain this view and I don’t care how many Geordies want to have a go at me. The bottom line is, you are a big club in Newcastle.

"You’re not a big club on the world stage, you will be. They are a big club in Newcastle but they will be a big club on the global stage.”
