Simon Donnelly shares Celtic legends snap as host of former stars help in Willie Maley statue fundraising weekend

Simon Donnelly was part of a star-studded Celtic XI who took part in a friendly across the Irish Sea and shared a snap of legends from various Parkhead eras as they celebrated with a slap-up meal.

And there was further good news after the weekend as a supporters group set up with the aim of erecting a statue in the club's first manager Willie Maley's home town of Newry revealed they have received full planning permission for a permanent tribute.

Donnelly was one of a host of ex-stars who took part in the match at Warrenpoint’s Milltown Stadium and the 47-year-old took to social media to post a picture on Twitter alongside fellow former stars of the current Premiership champions such as Brian McClair, Danny McGrain, Roy Aitken, Lubo Moravcik, Rudi Vata, Joe Miller, Tommy Johnson and Raymond McStay.

The photo was taken outside popular Newry restaurant Raymie's Bar And Grill and Donnelly simply captioned it "Brill". And the Newry Willie Maley Memorial Group replied to say: "On the back of a wonderful weekend involving Celtic Legends in Warrenpoint, we also have the great news that the statue has received full planning permission. Statue to be erected 2023. Further details TBC."

In an incredible 43 years as manager, Maley led Celtic to 16 league championships and 14 Scottish Cups after becoming the club's manager at the age of just 29 in 1897. He was born in Linenhall Barracks in Newry in 1868 where his father was stationed as a Sergeant.
