'Simon Clarke's insulting nurses comments prove Tories don't value NHS and its staff'

Former Cabinet Minister Simon Clarke was one of Liz Truss’s main cheerleaders.

He served by her side when her disastrous economic policies crashed the economy.

But, today Mr Clarke had the gall to tell nurses relying on foodbanks they needed to “budget better and take responsibility”.

If this Tory MP spent less time flinging insults and more time thinking before he opened his mouth he might have realised it was his Government’s irresponsible Budget that drained the Treasury of the resources that could have funded our public services.

He also might have realised nurses have been forced to take industrial action because their average salaries have fallen by 8% in real terms since 2010, leaving them unable to afford basics such as heating and eating.

His dismissive attitude is typical of a party that has failed to value the NHS and its staff.

By contrast, a terminally ill cancer patient joined the picket line to show her support for striking nurses. Patients understand how hard nurses work and why they need a pay rise.

It is time the Conservatives did so too.

Uncreditable

When Boris Johnson was Prime Minister he received an £800,000 credit facility from a Canadian cousin.

Despite a potential conflict of interest this very unusual arrangement was not revealed at the time. Labour is now rightly demanding the standards commissioner opens an investigation into Mr Johnson’s finances.

A healthy democracy relies on those running the country to be completely transparent.

Rishi Sunak came to power promising accountability at every level of Government.

If he is true to his word he would support this probe.

Same old world

When the world’s oldest woman was born in 1908, Europe was on the brink of war, Britain was facing economic decline and thousands of workers went on strike.

Over the next 115 years everything and nothing has changed.
