The Person Who Keeps Score
You have probably felt it, that faint sting when the help you gave went unacknowledged. You cooked the meal, drove the distance, stayed the extra hour, and something in you waited. Not for applause exactly. For a signal that it registered. That small, watching part of you is what the Gurbani calls haumai. It is usually translated as ego, but that translation flattens it. Haumai is closer to the persistent sense of I, the one who is giving, the one who is watching the giving, the one who is keeping, without meaning to, a running tally.
