Sikh groups ask Afghanistan Prime Minister to dispel misconceptions

AMRITSAR: Panthic organisations have appealed to Afghanistan Prime Minister (PM) Mohammad Hasan Akhund to carry out a probe why Sikhs were bracketed with BJP’s suspended woman leader Nupur Sharma’s alleged objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad.

The Panthic groups who made the appeal included the Hawara Committee, constituted by the parallel jathedar of Akal Takht, Jagtar Singh Hawara, who is the assassin of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and is currently lodged in Tihar jail.

One of the members of the Hawara Committee, Baljinder Singh, on Tuesday said they had come to know through media reports that ISIS (K) had taken responsibility for the attack, citing it as revenge for controversial remarks passed by Nupur Sharma.

He said the Hawara Committee had urged the Afghanistan PM to conduct a probe into why Sikhs were bracketed with Nupur Sharma and take necessary steps to dispel misconception and venom growing in the mind of gun-wielding persons in his country about Sikhs. ”We’ve also asked the Afghan PM to ensure protection and safety of Sikhs and their properties and take preventive steps,” said Baljinder.

According to reports, ISIS made a claim in a statement posted on its Amaq website that the attack was in retaliation to insults made by an “Indian-Hindu female politician against prophet Mohammad”. American Sikh Council president Jasbir Kaur said, “Our country (US) which prides itself to be a beacon of hope for religious freedom and liberty must help these unprotected (Sikhs) in Afghanistan who need to be given refuge immediately before they are targeted again.”
