Signs in your nail that could mean an underlying health condition

Changes in your nails could be a sign of an underlying health problem you are not yet aware of.

While the NHS says that your nails may change over time and it is normal for nails to become brittle, harder, or change colour - they urge people to contact their GP if they do not know why a nail has changed shape or colour. The NHS also urges people to seek their GP if their nail has fallen off or there are signs of an infection.

Our nails can actually tell us a lot about our health and if they become pale, this should not be ignored, health experts warn. Nail problems can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious or long-term condition, such as nail psoriasis, iron deficiency, diabetes or even heart, lung or liver disease.

According to the Mirror, knowing the changes in your nails may indicate the first step to a healthier life and could potentially be lifesaving.

For example, pale nails are a common sign of ageing but in some people, they can indicate more serious health problems. According to WebMD, very pale nails can sometimes be a sign of serious illness, such as:

  • Anaemia
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Liver disease
  • Malnutrition

If the nails are mostly white, however, with darker rims, this can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis. Whole white nails can be a sign of kidney problems indicating a protein deficiency.

But white nails with a pink or brown band at the top of the nail bed may signify a "serious health condition", reports On Health. Known as Terry's nails, this can occur in just one fingernail and can suggest an underlying health condition.

According to HealthLine, it could be linked to kidney failure, HIV, heart failure or skin conditions but it can also appear as a normal part of ageing. Speak with your doctor if you notice any changes to the colour of your nails, especially if you have any known history of a heart or liver condition.
