Significant year-on-year rise in employment across Monklands

Significantly more people living in Monklands are in employment than during the same period last year.

The Airdrie & Shotts area saw 2407 alternative claimant counts (ACC) made in November 2021 - a reduction of 1321 on 12 months earlier.

Neighbouring Coatbridge, Chryston & Bellshill's ACC claims came in at 2161 for the same month, which was a 1706 drop on November 2020's statistics.

But Universal Credit claims continue to rise in the North Lanarkshire region, with 452,700 made as of January 13 - an increase of 3325 on the same period in December last year.

Maxine Allison, Jobseekers' employer and partnership manager for North Lanarkshire, told Lanarkshire Live : "Our dedicated work coaches in the North Lanarkshire area are working flat out to help people get back into work, as we bounce back from the pandemic.

"We want people to know we’re there for them, and that we’re working with local employers to identify and help fill their vacancies in all sectors, but especially key industries.

"The good thing is there are jobs out there, and the latest figures show the number of online job adverts in Scotland have risen by 13 per cent since COVID-19.

"For those who aren’t ready to move into employment just yet, we currently have a specialised course to help address barriers and overcome them.”

The number of people employed in Scotland currently stands at 2.646 million - up 29,000 on last year.

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: “The UK Government’s Plan for Jobs is working, with the number of Scots on the payroll remaining higher than before the pandemic, and unemployment rates stable.

“While we must keep a close eye on the jobs market, our economy is proving resilient, thanks to the unprecedented package of measures we put in place at the start of the pandemic.

“We will continue to support people in Scotland to get jobs and to progress in work. This is a key part of our Levelling Up agenda, which will create opportunities and improve the lives of people in all parts of the UK.”
