Sick Lanarkshire brute jailed for breaking nose of partner and punching her whilst pregnant

A brute burst his girlfriend's nose three times and shattered her eye socket during a sickening catalogue of domestic abuse.

Vicious Steven Tait attacked the woman even after finding out she was pregnant.

His victim has been left with long term health problems including double vision and breathing difficulties.

The 33-year-old appeared from custody via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He was jailed for 46 months and will be supervised for two years on his release.

Tait admitted assaulting the woman to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment at addresses in East Kilbride between December 2019 and June 2021.

Tait also admitted punching a previous partner in the stomach and shoving her to the ground in Elgin Terrace, Hamilton, in 2011 when she was pregnant.

Chloe O'Hara, prosecuting, said his second victim needed hospital treatment for bruising and swelling after Tait headbutted her in December 2019, bursting her nose.

Six months later she referred to that incident during a conversation and a furious Tait punched her, again causing her nose to bleed, then shoved her into a bath.

Then in August 2020, when the victim was four weeks pregnant, Tait attacked her again.

Ms O'Hara told the court: "An argument broke out and the accused put his hands around his partner's neck, choking her.

"He took a step back and struck her with a punch, bursting her nose open. Tait then threw house keys at her, striking her face, before leaving.

"She was about 27 weeks pregnant when Tait assaulted her again in January 2021. She was punched repeatedly and struck her head off the floor.

"She remembers being unconscious for a while. She was taken to hospital and a scan confirmed a fracture to her eye socket."

Tait attacked his partner yet again in June last year, with a punch causing a "significant" injury to her eye.

He also admitted breaching a bail order by contacting her repeatedly.

The fiscal added: "As a result of injuries sustained at the hands of the accused, the complainer has a number of medical issues and has regular hospital appointments.

"The eye socket fracture caused double vision and she has difficulty breathing and issues with nasal congestion.

"She is on a waiting list for surgery.

"She also has a one-inch scar under her eye and nerve damage to her lip."

Sheriff Colin Dunipace told Tait: "You have pleaded guilty to extremely serious matters."

As well as jailing him, the sheriff said he will be subject to a 10-year non-harassment order.
