Siam Society is organising a study trip to southeastern Europe that will include visits of Albania, North Macedonia and Kosovo, from March 22 to April 2.
Located between some of Europe's most important empires in the Balkan Peninsula, these countries have a wealth of attractions from the Greek, Roman and Ottoman eras.
Across this part of Europe within well-preserved historic towns, old Ottoman architecture sits aside elaborately decorated Orthodox churches as well as impressive Roman ruins, and in more recent times next to the civic buildings of communist Yugoslavia.
The region is also blessed with incredible natural scenery including imposing mountains, pristine lakes and the sea. Albania has much natural beauty and offers a remarkable array of attractions. With its stunning mountain scenery, thriving capital in Tirana and beaches to rival anywhere in the Mediterranean, the country has become the sleeper hit of the Balkans.
North Macedonia is a small nation with a complex and fascinating history. Part Balkan, part Mediterranean and rich in Greek, Roman and Ottoman history, it offers impressive ancient sites along with buzzing modernity, managing to pack in more activity and natural beauty than would seem possible for a country its size.
Noted for its beach, summer festival, sublime Byzantine churches and 34km-long lake, Ohrid is the centre of country's tourism industry, while in the winter months skiing becomes the main draw.
Kosovo, meanwhile, is Europe's newest country notable for its charming mountain towns, incredible hiking opportunities and 13th-century domed Serbian monasteries. The state is one of the last corners of Europe that remains off the beaten track for travellers.
The fee is 99,500 baht (96,000 baht for members). For bookings, call 02-661-6470--3 ext 506 or 205 between 9am and 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
