Carolina Panthers defensive lineman (and fan) Shy Tuttle has really been able to get back to his roots since coming back home. And now, he’s hoping to help grow some new ones during his return.
The Winston-Salem, N.C. native hosted a free football camp for the kiddos on Saturday, which took place at his alma mater of North Davidson High School. Tuttle, who signed a three-year deal with the Panthers this spring, said he wants to provide the youth with an experience that wasn’t necessarily available when he was growing up.
“It’s an opportunity to give back to the kids,” Tuttle told WFMY News 2. “When I was a kid, we didn’t have anyone in my situation that was able to reach out like this. And I feel like it’s important just to hang around ’em.”

Tuttle was a three-sport star at North Davidson—where he participated in football, basketball and track and field. He amassed 35 sacks over his four years for the Black Knights and received All-Northwest North Carolina honors in three of them.
Nonetheless, that didn’t stop the campers from trash talking the hometown hero.
“They bring a lot of energy,” he added. “Kids talk a lot of junk, so you gotta bring your A game. It’s fun. I like being around ’em. Keep me youthful.”
He wasn’t lying . . .
