LONDON: A 15-year-old Indian-origin chess player has become the youngest ever British grandmaster.
Bengaluru-born Shreyas Royal, who lives in Woolwich, achieved the title at the British Chess Championship in Hull on Sunday, breaking David Howell's record of becoming one at 16 in 2007. He beat Howell and British Tamil prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan at the championship and drew with chess legend Michael Adams, top GM Luke McShane and Gawain Jones, who won the event. This made Royal England's 41st grandmaster.
