Should the Seahawks sign tight end C.J. Uzomah?

The Seattle Seahawks have a concerning injury problem at tight end, and it has created depth issues. Noah Fant and Pharaoh Brown have been out of commission for some time now. Although both are aiming to be back in action for the September 8th opener against the Cleveland Browns, their absense has prompted the team to sign a pair of tight ends in Devon Garrison and Michael Ezekie.

However, another option – a veteran one, at that – has just become available. In a shocking move, the Philadelphia Eagles just released tight end C.J. Uzomah. Despite signing a one year deal and getting starter reps, Uzomah is now looking for his third NFL home in two seasons.

Uzomah has largely been utilized as a blocking tight end, but the 31 year old has been a safe option in the passing game as well. His best season was with the Bengals in 2021 when he hauled in 49 receptions for 493 yards and five touchdowns, all career-bests, as he helped get Cincinnati to the Super Bowl.

An MCL injury derailed his 2023 campaign with the New York Jets, only playing in 12 games and catching eight receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown.

Uzomah may not be a dymanic weapon, but he would bring a veteran presence and help create legitimate depth for the Seahawks at a position of need. His contract with the Eagles was only worth up to $1,377,500, so it wouldn’t take a Brink’s Truck for Seattle to bring him on board.

If after the third preseason game there are still issues at the position, then the Seahawks should seriously consider giving Uzomah a call.
