Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton said: “It is despicable to think that those offenders who carry firearms think it is acceptable to use them in a residential area such as this.

“At this stage there are no reports of any injuries but it is extremely reckless to shoot a weapon on any street at any time of day."

Vile carer caught stealing on CCTV after family became suspicious

A "vile" carer was caught red handed stealing from a 93-year-old dementia sufferer after her daughter-in-law became suspicious and set up CCTV cameras.

Paula Irvine, 48, from Walton, stole hundreds of pounds from an elderly woman she cared for. Liverpool Crown Court heard today, Monday, the woman suffers from dementia and angina, and is visited by carers - who carry out tasks including making food and giving medication - up to four times per day.

Irvine was one such helper, having cared for the pensioner and her late husband for around five years. In June 2021, the woman's daughter-in-law became "alarmed and confused" when she discovered around £600 was missing from her purse.

The OAP also told her "if it's the carers then they're going to get into trouble". The daughter-in-law noticed further occasions where money had gone missing over the following month, leading to her installing a CCTV security system on July 1 last year.

Eight days later, cameras captured the moment Irvine crouched behind the armchair the woman was sat in and rifled through her handbag - which had been placed on a stand next to the victim. £70 in cash was taken from her purse during this incident, footage of which was played to the court.

Mum stepped out shower to find ex-boyfriend and gang in her house

A mum heard a bang while she was in the shower before being confronted by a masked gang of robbers brandishing a machete.

The terrified victim had a second knife held to her face and believed the raiders were also armed with a gun. The "ringleader" of the "shocking" break-in was later unmasked as her ex-boyfriend Darren Baptiste, who has now been jailed for 14 years.

Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday, Monday, that the single mother was home alone showering at her address in Rock Ferry, Wirral, at around 5.45pm on December 4 last year. She then heard a bang, and her dogs began barking.

The woman got out of the shower and found herself confronted by two men in masks and gloves. They had smashed a window at the rear of the property and climbed through in order to gain access.

One of these invaders was armed with a machete, while the other was carrying a flick knife. They demanded cash and took £300 which she had been saving for her children's Christmas presents.

But the pair demanded more, believing there was a "substantial sum" of up to £50,000 in the house, which they "ransacked". The knifeman pressed the blade into her cheek as he threatened her, causing a cut.
