UPDATE: Police have stood down the alert and said the package posed no risk.
A SUSPICIOUS item has been found by police within premises on one of Glasgow's busiest shopping streets promoting an "avoid the area" warning.
A cordon is in place on Argyle Street preventing access to stores including Deichmann, HMV, Barclays, and Superdrug.
Several premises have been evacuated and police are asking locals to "avoid the area" and insist that there is no threat to the wider public.
The force revealed that they were called to a report of a threat.
After that, a suspicious item was found within premises in the area at around 10.30am.
They have not advised where this was found.
As a precaution, officers say they set up a cordon and evacuated a number of shops.

A Police Scotland statement reads: "Emergency services are in attendance Argyle Street, Glasgow, following a report of threat made and suspicious item found at a premises around 10.30am on Friday, August 16, 2024.
"As a precaution, a cordon is in place and a number of premises are being evacuated.
"Please avoid the area.
"There is no risk to the wider public."
Later on Friday, a spokesperson from Police Scotland revealed that, following an investigation, it had been confirmed that the item posed no risk and the 999 response has been stood down.
They said: "Following a report of a suspicious item found at a premises in Argyle Street near to Queen Street this morning, enquiries have been carried out and it has been confirmed that the item posed no risk to the public.
"The incident has now been stood down."
