A Welsh council is urging shops and businesses to remove Kinder products which have been linked to an outbreak of salmonella in children. As of last week, there have been 76 cases of salmonella in the UK linked to certain Kinder products made in a factory in Belgium, with the majority of those affected being children under the age of five.
The UK Health Security Agency said on Friday that it was continuing to investigate the ongoing outbreak. The agency is working with the Food Standards Agency, Food Standards Scotland, Public Health Scotland, Public Health Wales, Public Health Agency Northern Ireland, as well as international public health and food safety authorities, to ensure that the risk to public health is minimised as far as possible. Ceredigion Council has now issued a warning to all retailers that they should “remove Kinder products linked to an outbreak of salmonella from their shelves”. A spokeswoman for the council said: “The products are believed to have caused a significant number of children to become seriously unwell, with many reported cases being admitted to hospital. We ask that all businesses who currently sell any of the Kinder products (listed below) ensure that the products are removed from sale immediately due to the potential presence of Salmonella.”

The list released by Ceredigion Council of products which should be taken off shelves is as follows:
- Kinder Surprise 20g - best before dates up to and including January 4, 2023
- Kinder Surprise 20g x 3 multipacks - best before dates up to and including January 4, 2023
- Kinder Surprise 100g - best before dates up to and including August 21, 2022
- Kinder Mini eggs 75g - best before sates up to and including August 21, 2022
- Kinder Egg Hunt Kit 150g - best before dates up to and including August 21, 2022
- Kinder Schokobons 70g - best before dates up to and including January 4, 2023
- Kinder Schokobons 200g - best before dates up to and including January 4, 2023
- Kinder Schokobons 320g - best before dates up to and including January 4, 2023
Ceredigion Council added that retailers which had previously sold any of the above Kinder products were reminded of the need to display a Product Recall Information Notice - which has been produced by the Food Standards Agency - at the point of sale.
Last month, one three-year-old girl from England was left “dead behind the eyes”, her mother claimed, after eating a Kinder Surprise chocolate egg. The woman said: “Her temperature spiked to over 39C and I struggled to disturb her. I knew something wasn’t right and spoke to the GP who ran through a list of what it could be. I came off the phone thinking she had a viral bug.
"Fast forward three days and it was confirmed she has salmonella from the Kinder chocolate she ate on Sunday. It’s been absolutely heartbreaking to see my usually fiery, adventurous and very active baby girl be the complete opposite of everything she usually is.”
