Shoppers struggle in flood water as rain batters Merseyside

Merseyside was battered by heavy rain today as roads were flooded and closed.

At around lunchtime today heavy rain struck Liverpool and parts of Merseyside as the Met Office published multiple flood warnings throughout England. Shoppers were spotted fighting through rain and floodwater, and at a Sainsbury's in Upton cars were forced to struggle through a car park submerged in water.

Pictures taken by the ECHO show parked cars sat in inches of water at the supermarket. Elsewhere a lane on the M53 motorway was closed due to flooding, from junction 2A (Upton) to Junction 2 (Moreton Spur).

Despite the lane closure, traffic coped well, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.

The rain is forecast to die down at around 3pm, falling to a 30% chance of precipitation, down from over 95% just an hour earlier. The heavy rain will then pick up again this afternoon, and will reach a 90% chance of rain at 4pm.

The Met Office's forecast for today said: "Dry initially before a band of rain sweeps north from late morning. A little snow possible for the highest ground.

"Temperatures around average but tempered by the breeze and rain. Maximum temperature 7 °C."

The Met Office said the heavy rain will die down at around 6pm tonight, with "scattered showers" expected. Their forecast for this evening said: "Rain gradually clearing through the evening.

"Clearer spells for the second half of the night as winds ease but with scattered showers as well, some heavy. Chilly under clearer intervals.

"Minimimum temperature 2°C."
