Shoppers say 'frugal' man's hack to save money on bananas 'should be illegal'

A number of social media users have urged a woman to break up with her 'frugal' boyfriend after she alleged that he has a rather interesting way of saving money when buying bananas.

In a move that she says gives her "secondhand embarrassment", her other half will peel each of his bananas individually before bagging them, knowing that they'll end up weighing less on the scales.

It's unclear exactly how much money he'd save by discarding the peel, or whether indeed it's worth risking the vulnerable fruit being mushed to pulp before you even make it home to your kitchen.

In a video shared to TikTok, the Australian content creator, who goes by the username @savingforboba, filmed her boyfriend in action, peeling his bananas in a supermarket aisle before popping them in a transparent plastic bag.

The footage, which has clocked up 813.3K views and counting, has left many followers aghast, and some have even pleaded with her to call off the relationship altogether, declaring this to be a "major red flag".

One person wrote: "Tell him to just weigh it without the bag too at this point."

Another claimed: "The peel accounts for 31 to 33 per cent of the total weight of the banana, so bro is getting 33 per cent off. lmao."

A third remarked: "The weight of the plastic bag and the cost it added must be giving him sleepless nights."

According to a report published in The Grocer back in March, the price of bananas is on the rise, with the price of a bunch at Aldi and Sainsbury’s having soared to 79p from a previous price of 71p.

There are of course much less fiddly ways to save money on your weekly shop, and this comes after a Mirror report that found shoppers could save plenty by switching from fresh to frozen with some items.
