Shoppers hit Newcastle for last minute gifts on a quieter than usual Christmas Eve

Newcastle's Christmas Markets may be packing up and leaving for 2022, but that didn't stop shoppers hitting Northumberland Street and Eldon Square on the last shopping day before Christmas.

Christmas Eve wasn't too busy on Northumberland Street, though in Eldon Square there were queues out the door for some shops. And people ChronicleLive spoke to had travelled to Newcastle from all across the region - some as far as Chester-le-Street and Teesside.

Sam Earl was picking up some last minute gifts ahead of her first Christmas with partner Wayne. The nurse from Teesside was in Newcastle ahead of a night shift - but she does have Christmas day off work.

She said: "I work for the NHS and I'll be doing long hours but I'm still getting ready for Santa coming. It's just the two of us to begin with and we're going to our families after, and I'm hoping I'll get some time to get my head down too.

"I can't tell you what I still need to buy today as it's a surprise and he's standing right here. He's next to me consistently, I keep telling him to go for a coffee!"

The Drivers had travelled up together from Chester-le-Street to pick up some gifts and spend time together as a family. Dad John and sisters Kate and Ellen were on Northumberland Street planning what to get for the sisters' mum as a gift from their uncle who lives in America.

Kate Driver said: "We're just out to get a couple of little things, seeing if there's anything that takes our eye. I've had so many emails this morning about sales!"

John added: "It's just a chance to get out and enjoy Christmas together as a family before the big day."

One family were able to enjoy it without the stress of shopping. Rosa Falkenstein and David Poore were among many to visit Fenwick's window, having brought their two-and-a-half-year-old son Casper. Rosa said: "No shopping for us, we've walked in from Jesmond.

"After this, we're going to walk back to the car and go for a little afternoon of veg prep and to make cookies for Santa!"

And they weren't the only family shopping for last minute food. Estate agent Kate Carter was picking up dumplings ahead of a Christmas Eve family tradition. She said: "I'm getting dumplings for Christmas eve as we always eat Asian food - but usually we make our own!

"I've got some gifts to pick up and it's a bit quieter than Silverlink at least. I need to get some perfume and something for my dad!"
