Shoppers declare Asda has already won the 'Christmas ad wars' this year

The John Lewis advert isn't even out yet, but people believe they've already seen the very best of the Christmas ads, declaring the others should just 'give it a rest'. The Asda offering this year has proven to be a real treat, bringing back Buddy the elf from Elf after nearly 20 years, and absolutely delighting those who watch the festive classic every year.

With footage imposed from the timelessly hilarious movie, Will Ferrell's beloved fish-out-of-water character can be seen applying for a seasonal job at a branch of Asda, causing all sorts of mayhem. It's proven to be a welcome burst of nostalgia for those who are starting to feel Christmassy, with Buddy's antics just as much fun as ever.

The ad has proven to be a hit (Asda)

Much like in the laugh-a-minute movie, Buddy sneaks into the store after hours to fill it wall-to-wall with seasonal decorations. This time around, however, Buddy's efforts impress his new boss, rather than angering him, and he ends up getting the position. It's fair to say the feel-good ad has generated enough Christmas spirit to power Santa's sleigh from the North Pole to New York, and many feel it simply cannot be bested, despite some worthy contenders this year.

One person tweeted: "This is the best Christmas advert by far. Whoever put this together needs a raise. Fair play Asda."

Another applauded: "I’m sorry but Asda wins the BEST Christmas advert this year! No one is gonna top that."

A third declared: "Asda has already won this year's Xmas ad wars with this cracker… …starring WILL FERRELL as BUDDY THE ELF."

Meanwhile, a fourth agreed: "That’s it, everyone else can take a rest this year. Asda has already won this year's Christmas ad."

A fifth person loved the creative ad so much, they remarked that they might 'start shopping there', with Buddy's magic touch winning her over.

Of course, there have been some other strong competitors for the Christmas ad crown this year, from Lidl's 'Lidl Bear', to Tesco's call for people to 'stand up for joy'.
