A shopper who has tasted one of Tesco's range of barbecue sauces says the result was 'an assault on my tastebuds' and 'just wasn't right'. Andrew Nuttall decided to try Tesco's Fire Pit Cola Ketchup.
He said: "I was slightly intrigued to see cola-flavoured tomato sauce during a trip to Tesco this week. The combination (priced at £1.60 for a 280ml bottle) seemed a bit bizarre to me, having never thought the sweetness of cola would pair with tangy ketchup - at least in the same bottle."
He added: "Sadly, this was not a banger."
Andrew compared the ketchup to the trifle Rachel makes in friends when she accidentally turns two pages and puts minced beef in with the custard.
He said: "I had visions of someone in Tesco's head office having to two ideas written down that became stuck together by mistake and - because nobody wanted to say anything - Cola Ketchup was born."
Andrew tried the ketchup with chip shop chips. He said: "Opening the bottle, there was an immediate smell that isn't familiar in the slightest. The sauce itself was quite thin but still took a sharp and tangy assault on my taste buds.
"If there wasn't a label on the bottle, I'd have no idea this product was meant to be cola-infused. It didn't taste like ketchup either so I was left feeling confused about what was in my mouth - I knew that it just wasn't right."
Andrew also checked out online reviews, he said: "One person said they bought the sauce and everyone at their BBQ "hated" it, adding the product was "disgusting" and urged people to "avoid" it.
"However a fan of the sauce - rating it a full five stars - said: "It reminds me of the limited edition Chicago town cola pizza which I loved years ago! The one star reviewer and BBQ guests must have faulty taste buds, cus this ketchup is a winner ."
"I'm lucky not to have gone with my usual approach with a chippy tea and drowned the potato treats in my condiment of choice. It's safe to say that I agree with the BBQ guests and I'll be sticking with bog-standard ketchup in future."
