This time of year, police departments and other law enforcement organizations across Kentucky are asking for contributions for programs like Shop With A Cop and Cops And Kids. Ryan Straw is the vice president of the state Fraternal Order of Police. He said these efforts are about more than getting presents for underprivileged children.
“It's an opportunity just to build relationships with local, local communities and an opportunity for kids to meet the law enforcement officers that patrol their streets and let them know that they're there to be their friend, and there to help.”
Straw said most local FOPs in Kentucky participate in one of the two programs.
“Our FOP lodges, out of the 68 lodges, 40 of them have active Shop With a Cop or Cops And Kids programs that go through their lodges, in partnership with police departments.”
To find out how to make a tax-deductible contribution to one of these programs, call your local police department or sheriff’s office.
