Neighbours have welcomed plans to enlarge a house in mulitple occupation (HMO) but concerns have been raised over parking becoming a 'competition'. Permission has been granted to turn the ground floor of a former shop in Carlton Road into a bedroom.
The property overall already has six bedrooms and the conversion will turn it into a seven-bedroom property. The HMO has led some people to raise concerns as parking in the area is already an issue.
Sydney Brown, 71, who is retired said: “Where are they going to park? I live round the corner and people are parking legally but it’s getting to the point where if you leave when you come back, you can’t get a parking space.
“It’s never been good as a shop. It [the ground floor of 60 Carlton Road] opens and then closes. Retail is suffering.”
Next to 60 Carlton Road are takeaways. The takeaways Carlton Tandoori and Pizza King are neighbours to the current HMO.
Jake Harrison, 27, lives in Carlton Road and feels that if a shop was to open, it wouldn’t do very well.
He said: “I don’t mind the ground floor of this becoming a bedroom. People need places to live and a shop wouldn’t do well here, it’s an odd place and I wouldn’t like to see another takeaway.”
The builder continued: “Whoever ends up living there is in a convenient place with town not being too far and there’s a good bus route into Carlton. Parking is a problem though, having a parking space around here is a bit like a competition."
Jessie Lee, 28, who lives in the city centre, said this part of Carlton Road is a place where people tend to walk by.
The nurse added: “To be fair, I don’t see why people would have a problem with another bedroom added, at least it will be used. There’s not much activity here, specifically people usually just walk by to go into town or walk up to go to the Lidl.”
Jessie continued: “I don’t know if a shop would have done well there, there’s an off licence across the road and more shops further up. This part of Carlton Road isn't used much."
