Did you know a brain stroke in India ends nearly 185,000 lives each year? This means that a person suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and death from a brain stroke occurs every 4 minutes. Alarming, right? In recent times, neurological issues like migraines, strokes, seizures, and various types of brain tumors have become increasingly common. These conditions, much like other diseases, require expert care and precision treatment.
For instance, around 40,000 to 50,000 people in India are diagnosed with brain tumors each year. Some tumors are harmless, others dangerous.
If symptoms such as regular headaches, feeling sick, vomiting, not seeing clearly, being unable to move, or having seizures occurs; it is essential to consult a neurologist or neurosurgeon immediately.
Although we are becoming more health-conscious today, we still tend not to take neurological issues seriously, which can cause small problems to grow into serious illnesses over time.
A middle-aged man, Sunil Patel, came to me complaining of impaired vision. After reviewing his old reports and speaking to him, it was revealed that he previously had a pituitary gland tumor that was operated by endoscopic surgery. I ordered new tests and found that the cancer had regrown in the exact location. This time, I treated him again with endoscopic surgery and strongly recommended post-surgery radiotherapy. Radiotherapy helps reduce the chance of tumor recurrence. I thought the problem was solved, but Sunil returned with the same complaints three years later. Over those three years, he had undergone two more endoscopic surgeries for the tumor but without post-surgery radiotherapy.
This time, his family was very distressed. The main reason for the recurrence of the tumor after surgery was neglecting radiotherapy. Hence, radiotherapy after surgery is essential to stop the tumor from coming.
Although Sunil was struggling, he didn't take the doctor's advice seriously, which, as a doctor, was disheartening. This time, I had to perform an open surgery to remove his tumor, a procedure that lasted several hours. Following the surgery, radiotherapy was recommended.
While we have the tools and knowledge to vastly improve a person's health. Yet, it's disheartening when individuals neglect to follow given treatments. Even as medical progress decreases death rates, the cooperation of patients is a key to make these treatments work.
Preventive measures for good and robust neurological health
Healthy lifestyle choices: Eating well, staying active, and managing stress can help prevent problems with your brain, like strokes.Control blood pressure and diabetes: High blood pressure and sugar are significant risks for strokes. Regular doctor visits and medicines are needed to keep these in check. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol: Smoking and alcohol consumption can damage your brain's blood vessels, making strokes and other brain problems more likely.Regular health screenings: Routine health check-ups are essential, especially If you have a family history of brain problems, go to your doctor often. This could help spot problems early. Cognitive exercises: Regular mental exercises, such as puzzles, reading, and engaging in intellectual discussions, help keep the brain sharp and reduce the risk of cognitive declineHead injury prevention: Wearing the right helmets and following road rules can prevent head injuries. These are a big reason younger folks (20-40) pass away.
If any signs of a brain disorder appear, don't panic; ask a doctor immediately. Quick spotting and treatment can save a life.
