Shirley Manson has teased the release of a new album from her band Garbage - as she and her bandmates have been hard at work in the studio.
The 56-year-old Scottish singer fronts the Alt Rock band which also includes guitarist Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and drummer and former Nirvana producer Butch Vig.
The band enjoyed success last year with their critically acclaimed album No Gods No Masters - which hit the top 5 in the album charts in the UK when released in June 2021.
Now Shirley says the group are working hard to create their follow up - but are aware they need to maintain the success of their last record while ensuring they produce punchy tunes.
She told the Kyle Meredith With podcast: "We started our eighth studio record a few weeks ago. We all still feel really excited when we get to make another record.
“I was so proud of No Gods No Masters and I still am. I knew when we finished it that this is really good, we’ve made something really, really good.
“To follow that record up is a bit of a conundrum in a way. Musically I know we’ll never run out of ideas.
“We get into the studio together and we jam and melodies come out and scraps of lyrics come out at the same time.”
She added: “I have a feeling in my gut of things I want to talk about.
“Every time I do a record I’m like, ‘What is it you want to say? These are things you want to get off your chest before you die’.
“To get that out of your core is so thrilling. You feel like, ‘Wow, oh my God, I’ve really touched on something here that I’ve wanted to get off my chest for so long’.”
Garbage first burst onto the music scene in 1995 with the release of their debut single Vow which was the lead track from their self-titled debut album.
They went on to release punk-rock hits including Queer, Milk and Stupid Girl and have appeared on the soundtrack to various films and TV shows including Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The also provided the theme song to the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough.
The group were invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall last year as part of James Bond’s 60th anniversary celebrations where they belted out their theme song with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Reflecting on the band’s involvement with Bond, Shirley told NME recently: “To be part of one of the most successful and enduring franchises in cinematic history and its legacy is extraordinary. There have only been about 25 Bond themes recorded thus far, and to be a member of that very small class is still a thrill 25 years later.”
Garbage have sold over 17 million albums worldwide - with their second record, titled Version 2.0, being a number 1 hit in the UK.
