Sherwood Observatory hopes to bring in 20,000 visitors with new 'fantastic' attraction

A Nottinghamshire observatory is hoping to draw 20,000 visitors in with a brand new attraction. Plans for the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society have been submitted as part of a multi-million pound plan to construct a state-of-the-art new planetarium and science discovery centre at Sherwood Observatory in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The project aims to enhance regional learning opportunities and be a place for people of all ages to experience and enjoy, inspiring a new generation of scientists and engineers from across the region and supporting jobs growth and prosperity. A hidden Victorian reservoir would form the facility's visitor entrance, with the planetarium and pavilion positioned above.

Matthew Relf, Ashfield Independents councillor for Sutton Junction and Harlow Wood, said the project would be a significant draw for the region. "It is a fantastic project that I have been supporting since the plans came to light, it would be a great asset to not just Ashfield but to the whole of the East Midlands," Mr Relf said.
